The Honorable Richard Burt

Richard Burt has joined McLarty Associates as a senior director. McLarty Associates works with clients worldwide to identify and pursue business opportunities. 

He also serves as chairman of IEP Advisors, an international consulting group; as an advisor to the Carlyle Group, a private equity investment firm and as a counselor to Barbour Griffith and Rogers, a public affairs group in Washington.

 Mr. Burt serves on the Board of Deutsche Bank’s closed-end fund group and on the Board of International Games Technology (IGT), the largest gaming machine manufacturer in the world. He is also a trustee of the UBS family of mutual funds (New York board). In addition, he is a board member of EADS North America and a member of the Alfa Bank’s Senior Advisory Board in Moscow.  

He earlier served as the chairman of the board of Weirton Steel (acquired by ISG in 2003) and was a board member of Homestake Mining Corp. (acquired by Barrick Gold in 2002) and the Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) Corp. He was also a board member of Hollinger International and from 2003 – 2005 played a key role in confronting issues arising from alleged wrong-doing by senior management. 

From 1992 to 1995, Mr. Burt was a partner with McKinsey & Company, the global management consulting firm. Mr. Burt came to McKinsey after successfully concluding a nuclear arms treaty as the U.S. Chief Negotiator in the Strategic Arms Reduction Talks with the Former Soviet Union.

Prior to this, Mr. Burt was U.S. Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany from 1985 to 1989.  Before Mr. Burt served in Germany, he worked at the State Department as Assistant Secretary of State for European and Canadian Affairs, 1983 to 1985.  From 1981 to 1983, Mr. Burt was the Director of Politico-Military Affairs in the Department of State.

From 1977 to 1980, Mr. Burt worked in Washington as the national security correspondent for The New York Times.  From 1973 to 1977, he worked for the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) in London, first as a research associate and then as Assistant Director.

Mr. Burt earned his Bachelors’ Degree in government from Cornell University in 1969, and his Master’s Degree in International Relations from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University in 1971.  Upon receiving his M.A., he was selected to participate as an Advanced Research Fellow at the U.S. Naval War College.  During 1972, he also served as a consultant to the House of Representatives’ Republican Wednesday Group on foreign policy.

Mr. Burt also serves as a senior adviser to the Center for Strategic and International Studies and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He is also a member of the Aspen Institute’s Middle East Strategy Group and is a member of the executive board of the Atlantic Council.
